Fourth Grade Targets

Trimester 1 


Unit 1 Math Targets:
*I can recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in the ones place represents ten times what it represents in the place to the right.(NBT.1).
*I can read and write multi-digit whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.  Compare two multi-digit numbers using >,<, =.  (NBT.2)
*I can use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers (less than or equal to 1,000,000) to any place. (NBT.3)
*I can fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000 using a range of algorithms. (NBT.4)
Unit 2 Math Targets:
*I can find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range of 1-100 and determine if the given number is prime or composite. (4.OA.4.1)
​*I can determine whether a given whole number in the range of 1-100 is a multiple of a one-digit number.  (4.OA.4.2 )
​* I can multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculations by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. (4.NBT.5)
​* I can multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison; e.g. using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem , distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison. (4.OA.2)


Literacy- ReadyGen 1A, 1B, 2A:
 

Reading:
LIT.4.1-3: I can draw on explicit and inferred details and examples when determining a theme, describing a character, setting, or event and when summarizing a text.
LIT.4.6: I can compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the different between first- and third- person narrations.
IT.4.1-3: I can refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly, when making inferences, when determining the main idea, when summarizing, and when explaining events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in historical, scientific and technical texts.  
IT.4.5-6: I can describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts and compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe the differences in focus and the information provided.


Informative Writing:
IW.4.2.1: I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic by introducing a topic clearly, grouping related information, and providing a concluding statement or section.
IW.4.2.2: I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic by developing a topic clearly, linking ideas within categories, and using domain-specific vocabulary.
W.4.4: I can produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.)

 

Language:
L.4.1: I can demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
L.4.2-CP: I can demonstrate command of standard English capitalization and punctuation when writing.
L.4.2-S: I know and apply the conventions of grade-level spelling when writing.
L.4.4-5: I can determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases, and demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings, based on grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.


Foundational Skills:
F.4.3: I know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
F.4.4: I can read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

 


Social Studies:
​*I can summarize the main functions of the federal, state, and local governments.
​*I can state the main responsibilities of the three branches of government (legislative, executive, judicial).
​*I can locate places on a map, which has a number/letter grid reference system
​*I can draw and label the equator and prime meridian on a map, including the degrees.

 

 

 

Science:


Unit 1:
*4-LS1-1. I can construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction
*4-LS1-2. I can use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.
*4-PS4-2. I can develop a model to describe that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen.
*3-5-ETS1-2. I can generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
*3-5-ETS1-3. I can plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.


Unit 2:
*4-PS3-1: I can use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object
*4-PS3-2. I can make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
*4-PS3-3. I can ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide.
*4-PS3-4. I can apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.
​*4-ESS3-1. I can obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses.

Unit 3 Math Targets:

*I can solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers using the four operations through  use of equation with a letter representing the unknown quantity.  (OA.3.1)
*I can interpret remainders when solving multi-step word problems with whole numbers using the four operations. (OA.3.2)
*I can find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations and/or the relationship between multiplication and division using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.  (NBT.6)
*I can fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. (OA.7)


Unit 4 Math Targets:
*I can recognize and generate equivalent fractions by using visual fraction models, and explain how they are equivalent.  (NF.1)
*I can compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators when they refer to the same whole and compare using >, <,= (NF.2)
*I can apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number. (NF.4)
*I can express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100. (NF.5)
*I can fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. (OA.7)

Reading:

LIT.4.9: I can compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.
IT.4.1-3: I can refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly, when making inferences, when determining the main idea, when summarizing, and when explaining events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in historical, scientific and technical texts.  
IT.4.5-6: I can describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts and compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe the differences in focus and the information provided. 
IT.4.7:  I can interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, timelines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text. 
IT.4.8-9: I can integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably, explaining how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text. 

 

Opinion Writing:
 

OW.4.1.1: I can write opinion pieces on topics or texts by introducing a topic clearly, stating an opinion, creating a clear organizational structure, and providing a concluding statement or section.
OW.4.1.2: I can write opinion pieces on topics or texts by supporting a point of view with reasons and information that are clearly linked.
W.4.4: I can produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.)

*4-ESS1-1. I can identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.
*4-ESS2-2. I can analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features.
*4-ESS3-2. I can generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.

Unit 5 Math Targets:
*I can use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. (NF.6)
*I can compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size when the two decimals refer to the same whole and compare them using >, <, =.  (NF.7)
*I can make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit. (MD.4.1)
*I can solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions of a unit of measurement by using information presented in line plots.
(MD.4.2)
*I can fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. (OA.7)


Unit 6 Math Targets:
*I can apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. (MD.3)
*I can classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel lines,  perpendicular lines, and/or angles of specific size.(G.2)
*I can identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. (G.3)
*I can fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. (OA.7)
